Canceling September's Music & Game Night
Due to circumstances beyond our control (namely a sinus infection/URI that is laying Teresa low) we are canceling this Saturday's Music & Game Night.

We love doing this so much and we are incredibly sad to cancel. We're proud of Music & Game Night as an institution, and we're always so glad that the community turns out to play & sing & eat and otherwise be merry.

We'll try for it again next month, and then begin anew in January.

Just a reminder about ericcoleman's birthday party
I wanted to remind everyone of the upcoming festivities, and see if I can get some RSVP's pretty please! They are not required, I'd just like to have a basic headcount.

Thanks!

We are hosting a birthday party...
On Saturday, December 20th, a bunch of crazies will meet up with one of our reprobate musician friends and the party will end up at chezdork for music, food and What Have You (which will be defined by the Birthday Boy, of course). Eric has asked to send this note out to our regular list - most of you have either met him here at the house, at a convention, and/or you own his Cd's. He's a fabulous guy (don't let him hear me say that) and we want to give him a resoundingly good birthday.

ericcoleman says:

Since my birthday is on a Sunday, I have decided to celebrate on the 20th. So ... here is the cunning plan that cannot fail. I'm going to Chicago.

At about 3:30 pm on Saturday December 20th I will be at the Lincoln Park Zoo ... dressed warmly I am sure. When I lived in Chicago I went there for my birthday several years running. The idea is to be there about dusk ... to listen to the wolves. There is no more sublimely lovely and unnerving experience. On one hand it is one of the most beautiful sounds in the world. On the other hand there is some primal thing in the back of your head that starts screaming !!! RUN !!! RUN YOU FOOL !!! RUN !!!

After that we will head south to chezdork in Joliet for food and music until we just can't take it anymore. So bring an instrument. If no one else brings instruments (and yes I know that there are quite a few in that house, I'm ignoring that for the moment) then I shall play more. Yeah you betcha, that should get them pouring in.

So ... please ... show up to one or the other or both. It would be a terrible thing if I am the only person there (guilt guilt guilt).

Presents are not necessary, but if you do feel the urge to go buy me something, I have a wish list on Amazon that includes 300+ a couple of items.

Mostly I want friends around me. Living in Iowa gets to me sometimes. I have a few friends here, but I really don't see them often enough due to traveling and the responsibilities inherent with the WSPA.

If you can read this, you are invited. Some folks I don't know as well, I'd like to get to know you better. Oh, and anyone who brings black balloons or anything like that will be thrown to the wolves. I have never been so alive as I am at this time. Come celebrate with me. 50 years ... it's been quite a ride.

[a note from the Denizens of chezdork]

Teresa will have some soup in the crock pot and some fresh bread as usual. Bring something snacky and a two-liter of soda to share... bring your guitar or a handcraft or just yourself and we will while away the evening celebrating with our friend Eric.

Reply here if you need help or directions, and someone will connect with you.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

PythonaCon Reminder - This weekend!!
Teresa would really appreciate some kind of headcount... if and when you'll be here if you can at least guess, and if you'll need crash space. Thanks!

It's time for PythonaCon again!

Every October Chez Dork hosts a small semi-private House Con called PythonaCon. We watch lots of Monty Python (shows & movies by the original cast as well as other things containing and concerning the various Pythons), and we play lots and lots of music. There is food and conversation. The Con starts on Friday afternoon and ends when everyone leaves on Sunday. This year (2008) PythonaCon will be October 10 through the 12th. RSVP's are requested but not required, to chezdork at gundo dot com. Directions and other information can be obtained by emailing that address for information.

Crash space is somewhat limited, but we do have it. The guest room is at least partly taken, but we do have floor space in the living room and office, or feel free to pitch a tent in the backyard. There are also hotels in the vicinity, if you need info let us know.

Friday: Plan to arrive anytime after lunch. Friday night dinner: chili and bread! Music & Game Night Rules apply (bring your favorite soda and a snack, be prepared to mingle and sing/play/listen)

Saturday: Mingling, talking, watching Python & music all day long (and the Cubs if they're in the playoffs). We'll do movies inside and maybe music outside if weather permits, if not we'll all be in the living room together. Quake or WoW in the office, bring your laptop for a LAN party.

Saturday Breakfast: pancakes & waffles, of course (I have found a recipe for something slightly different, if anyone's interested... stay tuned) Saturday Lunch: hotdogs! Saturday Dinner: order out, Dutch treat. Pizza maybe, or subs - consensus (and state of wallets) prevails.

Sunday: More Python, more music, more LANing.
Sunday Breakfast: pancakes & waffles
Sunday Lunch: Whatever we can scrounge up
Sunday Dinner: You're still here? Dig in the fridge. ;-)

This is a cat, dog and small child household: You have been warned.

September Music Night and Pythonacon Notice!
Music Night Saturday, September 20!

September's Music & Game Night is coming up Saturday night, September 20. As usual Teresa will make soup and have bread, feel free to bring a snack and a two liter of your favorite. Don't forget your weapon of choice (be it a guitar or a crochet hook, a tuba or a cross stitch needle). We’ll have some games, the Chez Dork Filker’s Sewing Circle and Terrorist Society, and lots of music.

We have something slightly new that started last month. Until now "games" has been a straggly and almost nonexistent trend - Teresa isn't much of a game person and gundo's busy with the music, so it's kind of withered. That is going to change, since Randy Roman has agreed to be Game Master and Official Encourager of Gaming. We are setting aside two card tables upstairs exclusively for board and card games.

Plan to show up around 6:00 and stay until we drive the last stragglers out the door with a drumstick. ;-)

Comment here, or email us at chezdork at gundo dot com if you need help or directions.

As always a link to our calendar is in the sig file of this email, as well as the URL for the Events List - feel free to forward this to people you think would be interested in joining us.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Reminder about Saturday Night
This is a reminder about our next Music Night, Saturday, February 9th - day after tomorrow, folks. It's more than just a Game & Music Night this time, it's also a fund-raiser for some well known members of the filk music community.

Greg and Maya McMullan's townhouse burnt to the ground January 26th, and Greg did not survive. We are turning our February 9th music night into a fund-raiser for Maya and Faeryn, as well as a collection point for items they've asked for. Chez Dork will package and cover postage. We already have a big box full of stuff that's been dropped off.

The suggested donation for this music night is $5 per person, but please give more if you can, and/or bring items to send along. We'd like to come together to help out one of our own from the music community.

From Dave Weingart's LJ, here is a current list of items they are in need of:

Wash Cloths
Towels
Pillow cases
Servingware
Tea!
Stuffed Animals (Comfort things)
Cards (personal sentiments that Mom would really like to read and keep near by)
Also any of those little "busy" items would be great!
Soduku
Crosswords
Cards
Any solitaire games
Coloring books and crayons/colored pencils (she even asked for these)

If you would like to donate directly please go here.

Thank you, and we hope to see you all on February 9.

Music & Game Night
I know we've been remiss in not publishing our calendar, but we will be doing so very soon.

For now I want to announce the first Music & Game Night of the year, to be held on January 19th.

The drill as usual, I’m making soup and I’ll have bread from the Polish bakery. Bring a snack and a drink and your weapon of choice. We’ll have some games, the Chez Dork Filker’s Sewing Circle and Terrorist Society,and lots of music.

Question for the Chez Dork crowd...
If I was able to get songwriter/performer Kenny Klein here for a house concert some time next year, what kind of interest would there be?

If you're not familiar with him, you can find information at these links:

MySpace (several of his songs are up there to listen to and buy for .99 a track)
Wikipedia
KennyKlein.net

I'd really like to get an idea of who would be interested so I can continue negotiations with him. Also, if anyone knows of anyplace else in the area he might be able to set up a gig that would be lovely.

Cancelled Music Night, Saturday September 15
Chez Dork is Chez Disaster!

Some of you may not know that Teresa has been called away to her hometown to help her mother, who had a heart attack last Friday. The good news is that Teresa's mother will be fine, the bad news is that she probably won't be home in time for this month's music night.

Remember that PythonaCon is coming up the first weekend in October. PCon is a house con at Chez Dork. It began as a weekend long birthday party for gundo, as well as a celebration of All Things Python. It continues to serve as birthday party, Python Celebration and (sometimes) celebration of the Cubs in the playoffs. We'll see if it's the latter this year.

Read all about it at http://www.pythonacon.org - we hope to see you all there!

EDITED! Rescheduling May's Game & Music Night, and a reminder about March
I have been informed that the 12th is the Riverfolk Concert at alymid's house - I thought I'd checked for conflicts earlier, apparently I hadn't. gundo and I do not want to miss that.

So! We're making this May 26, not the 12th or the 19th. With luck that's firm. ;-)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Since Chez Dork will be at Demicon (demicon.org) on the third weekend of May, we're rescheduling to the second weekend of May - so Chez Dork's May night will be the 26th, not the 19th.
Our next Game & Music Night is March 17th. Come and join us, green is optional - although Irish drinking songs would be fun.
We're going to start hassling everyone to bring a 2 liter of soda when you come. Pick your favorite to make it easy. We'll have ice and soup as always.
See you then!
Music Night Noodling (aka Thanks, gundo!)
Well, exciting things on the technology front here at Chez Dork.
gundo (as you probably all know, since most of you are on my flist) got a Zoom H4 for Christmas - it’s a portable stereo recorder. I got it for him early, primarily because friends of ours (particularly ericcoleman and almeda) were scheduled to have concerts at WindyCon. gundo pulled his toy out of the box and immediately put it to work recording both their concerts last Saturday.
almeda already picked her CD copy up and has it edited, so if you hear cuts from it, thank gundo! It was really pretty wonderful for the first time out of the box, IMHO.
I’m excited about him recording stuff at Music Nights, as well as using it in the future to scratch my audio theatre itches. One of my good friends, a musician and audio theatre performer/tech/sound effects guy got one very similar, so they’re going to geek mutually when we go home for Christmas.
Thank you so much gundo for wanting a toy that not only you, but the rest of us, can enjoy.
Question(s) on musical equipment for Pcon
1: Should I restring my electric bass for Pcon? Is anybody interested in using it?
2: Along the same lines, is there anyone who is coming who wants a guitar to play but for some reason can't bring their own? I've two 12-strings and the Variax that I could have ready.
3: And if you are bringing your own, but don't have a stand or a music stand? I've got a couple readily available and can get more out of the attic if I need to, but again advance warning would be appreciated.
4: Will anyone want the piano to plunk on, or should I pack it up so we have more room?
